In this little pink house, which appears pure white in the sunlight, Maestro Franco Battiato lived, worked, and loved for years. An extraordinary musician, singer, thinker, and mystical artist, Battiato left a seaside town as a young man to conquer the world. And, after the world was conquered, he went “back home” to enjoy the fruits of his passion and settled in the woods of Milo, a small town on Mount Etna overlooking the very sea from which he had set out. And it will be Milo itself, in collaboration with the maestro’s hometown of Riposto, to celebrate his memory from May 15 to 18, 2026.

The Sacred Return to the Essence

Born from an idea of ??the Centro Studi di Gravità Permanente (website here: https://www.csgravitapermanente.org/chisiamo ), the event titled “Il Sacro Ritorno all’Essenza – Art and Spirituality from the Paths of Franco Battiato” also sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Culture and under the artistic direction of Fiorella Nozzetti, consists of four days of performances, seminars, and special moments linked to the memory and artistic legacy of Franco Battiato, whose death marks the fifth anniversary on May 18.

As stated in the event’s presentation: “Among the evocative landscapes of Milo, a place of contemplation, and Riposto, a crossroads on the sea, the intellectual legacy of maestro Franco Battiato is celebrated. A free, multi-sensory journey, built day by day, that will traverse the traditions of East and West.”

The town of Milo will continue the celebrations from May 15th to 18th, while Riposto will join the celebrations only on the 17th.

Battiato and Milo

Franco Battiato was born on March 23, 1945, in Riposto, when it was still united with the city of Giarre and called “Jonia”. After completing his studies in Acireale, following the death of his father who emigrated abroad, at the age of twenty he left to look for work, first in Rome and then in Milan. In the Lombardy capital, he began frequenting music venues and nightclubs, where he gained valuable connections for what would soon become his career as a singer.

His constant search for new sounds (video here), experimentation, the ability to perfectly evaluate lyricists, and finally the musicality of his “very high” and delicate voice (video here) made Battiato a true musical phenomenon, which exploded in the 1970s and flourished in the 1990s.

Once he achieved success, and following the death of his mother, Battiato returned to Sicily and chose a house on the wooded heights of Mount Etna, a few kilometers outside the village of Milo. His estate, surrounded by orchards and citrus groves, became his home, his recording studio, but also a place where he welcomed both famous and unknown artists. A net of brilliant collaborations and lifelong friendships. Milo had become the artist’s indispensable refuge, and he especially loved the kindness of the neighbours, who proudly protected his privacy.

Memories and projects

Every year, the municipality of Milo remembers its beloved and famous fellow citizen, along with another illustrious guest of this area, singer Lucio Dalla. Together, the two artists have been immortalized forever in a large, life-size bronze statue that stands in the center of the Belvedere square, next to the church of St Andrea.

Thousands of tourists—especially in the summer—come here to have their picture taken in front of the monument. These same tourists love to come to commemorative events like the one taking place this weekend. The idea of ??transforming Battiato’s home in Milo into a thematic museum dedicated to him is still being considered. It’s an idea that hopefully will soon become real, especially because—although Milo is great at hosting various Battiato-related events—it needs a… “permanent center of gravity” (as one of the maestro’s most famous songs tells) where to focus all its love for Franco.
