There’s a special thrill to have on an active volcano: breathing in its vibrant energy at night. This experience is possible on Etna, naturally always accompanied by a local guide who knows the area and its secrets, even… without light. The allure of Etna at night goes far beyond the spectacle of an eruption (which doesn’t always happen) and is summed up in the variety of colors and emotions you’ll experience at sunset, in the dead of night, and finally at dawn. And while once upon a time, brave young people camped directly at the foot of the central crater, today we are more cautious: but with thorough consultation with volcanologists at the INGV in Catania, you could experience something similar.

When to plan?

A night trek on Mount Etna is suitable for any season, with the right equipment. However, we recommend undertaking this experience in spring or summer. The light lasts longer, allowing for a more comfortable trek, and the nights are clearer.

The most beautiful sunsets

To admire some of Etna’s most beautiful sunsets, you have to go to the south side. Here, on the Piano Vetore slopes, the sun creates golden and orange hues above the treetops as it disappears westward, beyond the volcano’s lava crests. In summer, spectacular sunsets can also be enjoyed from the northeast side: there are few days during this season when the sun seems to set directly in the summit craters… fueling legends of the “birth of the lava.” The most spectacular sunset, however, is from the summit, when, as the sun sets, you’ll see the enormous triangle of shadow cast by the volcano stretch out across the sea toward the coast.

When you go on a nighttime excursion on Etna, a good guide will always know where and how to show you the most captivating sunsets, and it will be the beginning of an unforgettable experience.

Night on the volcano

Equipped with good flashlights and everything you need to cope with the drops in temperature, the excursion will continue into the darkness of the evening.

Every corner of Etna is ideal for a nighttime excursion. The fragrant woods, the lava fields from which you can admire the brilliant stars. For dinner and a good night’s rest, there’s no shortage of refuges and bivouacs . The bivouacs are always open, accessible to all, and equipped with the bare essentials for cooking and sleeping. The refuges, which are much better equipped, must be opened upon request (most of the time, the guides will take care of obtaining permits). Among the most romantic refuges for a night on Etna, we recommend: Galvarina, Carpinteri, Timparossa, Citelli, Brunek, and Ragabo.

If you’re lucky enough to experience a volcanic eruption firsthand, your night will be dominated by the colors of the lava fountains and the deep rumblings of the explosions. Etna’s charm is also evident in its “voice,” which is even more impressive at night, yet also accompanies you on your journey. On occasions when lava flows from low-lying fractures, cutting off roads and fields (as happened in 2025 for example), guides organize night excursions to see the fire serpent up close.

… Until dawn!

When the first shades of light begin to appear on the horizon, the landscape slowly changes. The intense black of the lava flows gives way to shades of gray, while the sky turns blue, purple, orange, and pink. It’s a spectacle that changes every day, but never looks the same. It goes without saying that the best sunrise on Etna is enjoyed from the summit or from the eastern slope. However, some spectacular photos have been taken from the west, when the sun slowly peeks over the craters, radiating light towards Bronte and Maletto!

If you find yourself at the top of Etna, admire the pure morning air as you gaze across all of Sicily, all the way to the Aeolian Islands and even Malta. The cities at the foot of the volcano, the cultivated fields, the woods, and the outline of the surrounding mountains are clearly visible. The contrast between the green vegetation of the slopes and the almost lunar landscape of the summit makes this place unique in the world. Turning west, you’ll see the volcano’s cone stretch out again, this time in the opposite direction to the sunset.

If you’re bivouac in the woods, nature will surprise you at dawn. The soft breeze, the singing birds, the strange rustling of reptiles in the grass… As the sun rises high in the sky, the colors become more vivid and the panorama reveals itself in all its magnificence. The shadows shorten, the heat increases, and the mountain comes alive with the arrival of new visitors. However, those who have been lucky enough to witness the sunrise take home a special memory: that of a unique moment, in which nature revealed itself in its most authentic form. Sunrise on Etna is not just a natural phenomenon, but an experience capable of leaving a profound mark on the memory and heart of those who experience it.

Who should you take on a night hike with?

Climbing the volcano before sunrise means navigating the darkness, accompanied only by torchlight and the sound of footsteps on the lava rock. The air is crisp and fresh, the wind carries the scent of the mountains, and the sky, still dark, is dotted with thousands of stars… it’s magical. But you must always keep your feet on the ground and follow your guide!

Excursions are generally led by expert guides and volcanologists who know the area perfectly and ensure the safety of the group. Throughout the hike, the geological history of the volcano, its most significant eruptions, and the characteristics of the flora and fauna that populate this extraordinary environment are explained. Night treks are suitable for both mountain enthusiasts and those looking for a different activity during a holiday in Sicily. The routes vary in length and difficulty, allowing even the less experienced to participate by choosing accessible itineraries. It’s recommended to wear hiking boots, clothing suitable for evening temperatures, and a headlamp, often provided by the organizers.

Taking part in an organized night trek on Mount Etna means immersing yourself in a natural environment of extraordinary beauty, admiring spectacular views, and experiencing the volcano in complete safety. It’s an activity that offers authentic emotions and allows you to observe one of Sicily’s most fascinating places from an unusual perspective, transforming a simple excursion into a lasting memory.
